Pectin is pectin. If you eat apples and lemons, eat pectin. When in doubt, always read what Elaine Gottschall had to say. She made her jams with strawberries, raspberries, peaches, apricots, blackcurrants or a combination of these. Then she added honey (1/2 cup for each liter of fruit). She didn`t use apples or lemons. Unfortunately, store-bought jams do not fall into the legal category of sickle cell disease because they contain pectin and sugar. However, there are a few alternatives to store-bought jam. It would not (officially) be legal with the concentrate unless it is confirmed with the company that nothing has been added to make the concentrate. Often, fruits can appear in ingredients because they use them to add sugar to the final (“natural”) product (making them illegal), and concentrated juices are illegal because things are almost always added to them during the concentration process. That said, I`m sure it`s safer than many other jams. Although tapioca flour on sickle cell disease is not “legal”, it is one of the foods I was able to reincorporate into my diet after my symptoms disappeared! I see that one of the ingredients is concentrate juice. Juice concentrates are banned in the SCD diet, so I`m not sure it`s legal.

Jamba Juice, for example, says their juices come from concentrate. However, they say they only focus on shipping purposes and nothing is added. If this is the case (I haven`t officially confirmed it), it would make their concentrate legal. Figs naturally thicken jam, so they are ideal for making pectin-free jam. You can, of course, make simple fig jam, but I only like it in small quantities, so I didn`t want to make a whole pot out of it. I love berry jams and had a bunch of fresh raspberries that I had to eat, so I opted for raspberry jam. I`m on the SCD diet and found a few items that are SCD legal and can also be purchased in the store. One is Jennie`s BIG macaroons (only the individual size of 2 oz). It contains coconut, honey and sulfite-free egg whites. The other is Buddy Fruits Apple Chips (both flavors, 1.5 ounces). I have also confirmed with these companies that no other ingredients are added other than what is listed.

However, I agree that store-bought “goodies” should be approached with extreme caution. And if you choose to enjoy store-bought treats, continue to contact the company frequently to make sure the ingredients haven`t changed. Option One: Make your own SCD legal jam, like the Mommypotamus recipe. Below is a list of allowed (legal) foods and unauthorized (illegal) foods while following the specific carbohydrate diet™, as described in the book Breaking the Vicious Cycle. With that in mind, these sickle cell friendly baked goods are made with anti-inflammatory ingredients such as almond flour, coconut flour, tapioca flour, butter, strawberries, and an unsweetened coconut butter icing. Of course, I used this as an excuse to be lazy and throw everything in the blender instead of laboriously cutting the cold butter by hand! While you should always be careful not to overmix the dough (you don`t want to spray the small pieces of butter completely!), it`s so much faster and easier this way. During my first year in London, I had an endless stream of guests coming to me. Having just graduated from university, most of my friends from Canada were eager to travel and had little money, so a free couch to sleep in central London was an opportunity that few people could miss. In addition to a bed and breakfast, I also offered tour guide services to those who slept on my couch and knew that a comfortable sofa would lead to a full-time job in the hospitality industry.
